On Our Way To Halloween

As for most occasions, I am all for Halloween.
We already have our house decked out in ghoulish fashion and the kids costumes are ready to go.

There isn’t much you can’t buy with today’s marketing for this once subdued occasion.
Decorations are out just as school starts and it really sends the kids, and kids at heart, into a seasonal frenzy.

When I was a kid, I was lucky if my parents would go all out and buy me a plastic mask with a tie on flimsy plastic suit that vaguely resembled some super hero of the day.
Usually I spent days creating the best costumes ever by raiding the folks closets or the thrift stores.
That was Halloween.
Not any more.

It is now marketing mayhem.

I remember a rare chocolate bar in amongst my pillow case full of toffees, candy corn and licorice, I do not think that my kids have come home with even one toffee and chocolate bars are the staple in their trick or treat bags.

We have a family agreement that they can get as much candy as they want but when they get home they must sort through it all and pick whatever will fit into a 1 Kg yogurt container.
The rest they trade in for a costume for their dress up or some such thing.
This has worked so well and I can even say that they have more than half their candy still in the cupboard above the sink.
And I know what your thinking, what happens to all the left over treats?
Aside from a few nibbles, they all get donated to the crews at my husbands work.

I love to make special treats and indulge the kids in crafty Halloween ideas and this has curbed
their constant asking for said sweets.

One of our baking adventures were these meringue ghosts with chocolate chip eyes.

Still our personal favorite this year was the marshmallow skeleton faces that I posted a couple days back.
Some scissors, marshmallows and chocolate sprinkle were all that was needed to make these little creatures.
Check them out.
