Homeschooling... with Apples

Apples apples everywhere, we eat so much we can't ...keep up.
Okay it doesn't rhyme but you get the point.

We have a few over productive trees and despite my best efforts I can't use them all.

Today as we embarked on a new homeschooling program, away from school in a box, I had to come up with a lesson plan that would incorporate all that we need with all K would like.
Apples were it.
I found that with a little creativity I could meet and beat any learning outcome that is needed by looking at what we already have and already do.

We started the moring with quick overview/comparison of the rate of decomposition in apples.
This also become a safe way to observe wasps as they eat on the soggy fermenting flesh.
Then we gathered them for compost heap.
Yes a bit of chores thrown is for good measure.
Onto structural mechanics, aka apple towers.

The sculpture challenge captivated 3 kids for a very long time.

Who has the highest pile was a fun game as well.
Everyone came up with very different and creative ideas.

For today's learning outcomes I can say we worked on physics, balancing/fulcrum points,
weight distribution, planning, yadda yadda...the list goes one.

Nature really can be our school room.

Next apple art!!

I heart paint.
My kids love paint.
This is always a winner.

Apple prints..... for wrapping paper.

.....laminated number cards for E's learning.

....a little note attached to flowers we left in our friends mail box.

Don't forget about the tree.
Apples come from trees.
Or do they come from the seed.

Which came first? become a great conversation as we made this craft.

A little science.

Do apples float or sink?
What about rotten ones?
Big ones? Small ones?

MMMMMM The science of cooking!!
We made fresh raw apple sauce and deydrated it into fruit leather.
Kid friendly and quick to make Raw apple crisp, because we needed something yummy to snack on.

Then of course the abligitory seasonal fresh baked apple pie.

You know what?
I think I may just be getting the hang of this homeschooling thing.
