I had a moment this afternoon as I was quickly assessing a pen for the meat birds we will soon be getting, but needing to get back to the house to take my bread out of the oven.
A moment that I realized that indeed I may have been born in the wrong era.
Or was I?
Maybe I am the new generation of homesteaders teaching our children how to live off the land and get back to the earth, the roots of nature. A throw back to yesteryear, where family and community were a priority and goodwill and honour meant something.
I wipe my hands on my apron, move the muffins I just baked over on the cooling rack making room for the fresh hot bread and stop to take a good look around me.
Fresh baked, wholesome foods made from scratch with love and pride.

Check.

Apron on, kids in mostly hand made clothes and a little log house that is our home, filled with love and beautiful children's' crafts as my most prized art processions of course.
Check.
A yard full of gardens that we grow together and live out of most of the year.
Animals that we raise for food and pets that make our family complete.
Check.
Together, hand in hand, carving our way in this crazy world trying to live the best life possible without all the negative influences of the mass material garbage.
No T.V., no video games, and as much imagination and crafting as possible.
Check.

Being able to take advantage of the many resources and benefits available in our amazingly cultural and prosperous community. (I think I would be neglectful if I didn't).

Check.

Thankful to be able to raise our children in fresh air, with drinkable tap water and lush green spaces.
A diverse geographical location that affords us the luxury of skiing and kayaking and fossil hunting in the same day.

Check.

Truly believing that our children are the future and believing that they can, with careful nurturing and guidance, lead us out of the miserable environmental and economical state the world is headed in.

I have to believe that, the alternative is too scary.

Check.

Teaching them what is really important; respect, honesty, trust and love.
Learning from each other and giving each other the room to grow and learn.
To honour our uniqueness and treasuring our humanity.
Check.

Knowing that good old fashion hard work gets things done and that there is no such thing as instant gratification, unless of course it is a hug and a smile from someone you cherish.

With great satisfaction, Check.
